Discover how Ubrique became the leather goods capital in this fascinating  museum, housed in a restored building.

For two hundred years Ubrique people have been making many of the world's leather goods. Ubrique Leather Museum seeks to show this great tradition and reflect the achievements of the leather craftsmen and women of Ubrique.

Our workshops have the best skilled workers in the process of hand-crafting leather goods such as wallets and purses, and you can watch it in the walls the museum which tell the stories of the Ubrique leather trade and feature splendid examples of local craftsmanship past and present.

In addition to this, the leather museum has an excellent, friendly and welcoming staff.

The town´s natural surroundings ensure the presence of venison meats on its menus. Ubrique is well known for such dishes as its migas  cocidas, asparagus soups, tagarnina ( golden thistle) stews and its  chorizos (sausages with wine). You really must try the Iberian cold meats, cheese from sheep´s milk and other products from the Sierra. And its dessert, gañotes and borrachos should definitely not to be disregarded.

LEATHER WORK IN UBRIQUE

Leather work in Ubrique dates back to the ancient Roman and Muslim tanneries. At the end of the XIX Century Ubrique experienced a lot of growth thanks to a boom in the sector. Today this sector is at the fore of national and international exports. The collections change each season and they are often designed in Ubrique.

The work in the factories ( most of them were originally family businesses) begins with cutting the leather by hand as it was done in the past. The raw material is top quality leather of different kinds, colour and textures.

The designed are cut piece by piece. In the past this was done using moulds whereas today it is carried out by mechanical blades. The second  step consists of reducing the leather to the desired thickness by means of a levelling machine. This is follow by the sewing and pasting processes which are entirely carried out by hand with traditional tools such as the unmistakeable "patacabra" (goat´s leg).  They are then engraved and the labels are attached. A medium sized factory may produce around 70 finished leather bags in two hours.
